“Armagnac” residential complex in Bordeaux
Extraordinary timber frame construction
In the heart of Bordeaux, the Wood & Stone Towers dominate the skyline of the neighbourhood surrounding the Bordeaux-Saint-Jean station. The design by Colboc Sachet architectures translates urban density into flexible architecture with social and eco-friendly aspirations.
The height of the Wood Tower, which is mainly made of timber, is particularly impressive. With a height of 28 metres, it was necessary to find a facade cladding that was stable and at the same time light enough to be supported by a timber frame construction over this height. The decision was made to use the StoTherm Mineral facade insulation system covered with external render that matches the colour shade of the stone typical of Bordeaux.
Since timber undergoes significant dimensional changes over the years, a horizontal overlap in the form of StoDeco profiles was also planned every two storeys, which not only stabilise the tower but also give it a rhythmic quality over its entire height.
The result is a building that combines the advantages of timber frame construction with a hard-wearing, durable facade design, and, together with the Stone Tower ensemble, respects the urban identity of Bordeaux.

“Constructing a 28-metre-high timber building requires solutions that combine texture, weather protection, and facade design in an unusual way.”
