“The Atrium at Sumner”, a senior housing development in New York Studio Libeskind
Modern senior housing development stands as a shining beacon in Brooklyn
An 11-storey senior housing development has been built on a vacant plot on the “Sumner Houses” campus in Brooklyn according to plans by Studio Libeskind. The completely white, sculpture-like building follows the “aging in place” philosophy, allowing residents to grow old in familiar surroundings. Libeskind wanted to create a place that would feel like home to the residents.
Of the 190 apartments in total, 132 are reserved for low-income senior households and 57 for formerly homeless senior citizens. The residential complex is home to a flourishing community of seniors, providing residents with an improved quality of life.
The building is defined by a dynamic yet clear geometric form, punctuated by a pattern of open and closed elements. Bold diagonal lines extend upwards from the ground floor, creating the visual impression of a folded form that gives the building a lighter appearance.
The facade of the new building is entirely white in order to reflect the light and create a contrast with the brick facades of the surrounding buildings. The facade material was chosen for its abstract appearance and high performance. This will ensure that the residential building remains a shining beacon on the campus for years to come.
