Eye-catching and equally unobtrusive:
Deep green rough textured surface to mask the unevenness of the pre-existing building walls.
A commercial building from the 1980s was recently remodelled on a densely built-up street corner in Seoul, South Korea. It was important to the architects to organise the random traces of the past and to rediscover the shape of the building.
Accordingly, they retained the shape of the existing building as far as possible, added a two-storey vertical extension, and carefully redesigned the facade.
In general, the exterior wall surfaces of old, frequently renovated buildings often become uneven over time - and this project was no exception. Together with the desire for higher insulation properties and the resulting need to reinforce the walls, this posed a challenge in the renovation process.
In the end, the architects opted for a facade insulation system with a rough structure in a deep green colour, which earned the building the name ‘Blair Garden’. The plaster texture provides a rough surface finish. Any imperfections in the substrate can thus be filled in. At the same time, the rough render creates exciting shadows on the facade in changing light conditions, making the building stand out visually from its surroundings.
