Special solutions for a clean, gleaming white appearance
A new building was constructed for the children’s sanatorium for respiratory illnesses in Ostrov u Macochy based on plans by Adam Rujbr Architects, with a design inspired by the archetypal house found in children’s drawings.
The clean lines and overall appearance of the complex were not to be disrupted by the roof drainage system. However, internal rainwater pipes are often difficult to install and maintain. For this reason, the architects designed a downpipe to be concealed inside a recess.
In the area around the downpipe, the thickness of the thermal insulation has been reduced. To prevent thermal bridges and energy losses, high-quality thermal insulation with excellent performance parameters was used. Thanks to this super insulant, this part of the roof achieves the same thermal values as the rest of the building.
The region’s characteristic limestone was the inspiration behind the architects’ decision to use pure white for the two-storey medical complex. White – a colour associated with clarity and freshness – helps forge a strong link between the building and the surrounding landscape.
As the building is located very close to a forest, there is an increased risk of soiling. To achieve a facade that would still remain clean and white in the long term, the architects chose a Lotus-Effect finishing render with self-cleaning properties.
