Refurbishment and extension of “The Hats” residential complex in Bolzano
New identity for existing residential complex
In the heart of the Don Bosco district of Bolzano, a residential complex built in the 1960s and comprising three buildings providing social housing has undergone comprehensive refurbishment and architectural reinterpretation. The aim was to use colours, shapes, materials, and technological interventions to give the buildings a new identity, but with due consideration of the district’s historical features.
Intending to use material and the rhythm of the surfaces to invigorate the facade, the architecture firm chose a number of techniques from the StoSignature toolkit. Colour coatings or granulates were used to customise the design of each texture.
The protruding white window frames create architectural interplay on the facade. At the same time, they form the interface between interior and exterior as a compositional and characteristic element.

“The pattern on the facade was designed to change with the light and create movement through the contrast between smooth, rough, and linear surfaces. The StoSignature toolkit gifted us the unlimited combination of textures and effects.”
